CDK2 a serine/threonine protein kinase, is a member of a highly conserved family of protein kinases that regulate the eukaryotic cell cycle. The protein kinase is homologous to the gene products of S. cerevisiae cdc28, and S. pombe cdc2. For activity, it requires association with a cyclins which act as the positive regulatory subunit. It forms complex with cyclins A, E, D1, and D3. Cyclin E- CDK2 kinase is active in the G1 and S phases of the cell cycle and is important for the progression from G1 to S phase.
