One pound of dry diet makes about 4 lb of food, enough for 80 to 100 larvae.

This food smells and is a pain

I bought silkworms for three classes. I have 3 worms left and they have yet to spin cocoons. The food is pungent. It is hard to store in a school because no one wants their class to smell. I have been diligent about cleaning the worm feces and replacing the dry food- which dries up very quickly. It is a lot more work than I anticipated. I am wondering if the leaves wouldve worked better and been a lot less clean up- my classroom smells like cat food.
I have not yet been successful in raising a batch of silkworms using this food.

I have been raising silkworms using real mulberry leaves for 15+ years. Twice I have tried using this artificial diet and twice I have killed every single larva. I followed the cooking instructions very carefully and they still have died. I finally called Carolina help line two days ago and was told that the instructions for making small batches (3 tablespoons at a time rather than the whole batch at once) have changed in the past two or three years. I am now told that I should NOT put the food in the refrigerator - just the opposite of what my instruction sheet says to do. Im going to try it again......
