MAPK is a 42kD member of the serine/threonine protein kinase family. MAPK is also known as extracellular-signal regulated kinase (ERK) and is an important integration point of many signalling pathways. It modulates gene transcription in the nucleus in response to changes in the cellular environment, controlling a range of cellular processes including proliferation, differentiation, transcription regulation and development. MAPK is also thought to be important in learning and memory. When phosphorylated, activated MAPK translocates to the nucleus, where it phosphorylates nuclear targets.
