This gene encodes a protein which is a member of the cysteine-aspartic acid protease (caspase) family and is a downstream effector cysteine protease in the apoptotic pathway. It is made of two subunits, p20 and p11, which form the active complex. Sequential activation of caspases plays a central role in the execution-phase of cell apoptosis.
