Glutamate receptors (GluRs) are the most important mediators of excitatory signal transduction in the central nervous system. They can be pharmacologically classified in three distinct classes: alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptors, kainate (KA) receptors, and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors.
