Procysteine is a prodrug form of cysteine that is metabolized to cysteine intracellularly and has antioxidant activity. It reduces TNF-α-induced increases in the expression of IL-6 and chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2 (CCL2) in ARPE-19 human retinal pigment epithelial cells when used at a concentration of 0.5 mM.
