Sustainability in the Lab

By Labscoop Team
January 5, 2024

As the lab supplies industry continues to grow, so too does the amount of waste it produces. From plastics and hazardous materials to packaging waste, the environmental impact of the industry is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. At our company, we are committed to addressing this issue and promoting sustainability in the lab.

One of the key ways we are reducing our environmental impact is by minimizing the amount of packaging used for our shipments. Our fulfillment team has implemented a number of measures to achieve this, including using eco-friendly packaging for products and shipping boxes and packaging materials, such as recycled insulated boxes and insulated mailers instead of Styrofoam boxes for cold shipments.

We also work with suppliers that share these same values. Within the Labscoop Marketplace, we display a badge indicating that the supplier is utilizing green practices or the product in some way is working towards sustainability, such as using biodegradable plastics or recycled plastics for primary packaging. In some cases, the function of the product itself supports sustainability, such as a lyophilized qPCR mix that is stable at room temperature and does not require cold chain-related packaging.

Additionally, we consolidate orders by merging together multiple supplier shipments into a single shipment and streamline the ordering process to reduce the environmental impact of processing a purchase order.

In addition to reducing packaging waste, we are also taking steps to reduce the amount of hazardous waste produced by our operations. This includes implementing proper disposal procedures for chemicals and other hazardous materials and working with our suppliers to source environmentally-friendly alternatives where possible. We are also committed to recycling and repurposing materials whenever possible to help minimize the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.

We recognize that addressing the issue of waste in the lab is not just the responsibility of our company but of the entire industry. That's why we are committed to working with our peers and partners to promote sustainable practices and raise awareness of the environmental impact of the lab supplies industry. Through collaboration and innovation, we can make a real difference in reducing waste and promoting sustainability.

To further our efforts in this area, we have also partnered with organizations and initiatives that are dedicated to promoting sustainability in the lab. This includes working with other companies to develop and implement best practices for waste reduction and sustainable operations and supporting research and development efforts that aim to create more sustainable lab supplies and materials.

Education and awareness are also key to promoting sustainability in the lab. That's why we regularly provide resources and information to help our team implement the latest sustainable practices in their operations. We are committed to being a leader and a resource in this field and to helping the life sciences industry become more sustainable and responsible.

In addition, we are committed to reducing our own carbon footprint and mitigating the impact of our operations on the environment. To that end, we have implemented a number of measures to reduce our energy use and emissions, including investing in renewable energy sources and energy-efficient technologies. We also take steps to reduce paper consumption by not printing faxes, instead digitally generating and converting them into PDFs that reside in our system, and by not sending paper invoices or bills but rather emailing them to our customers. We offer convenient electronic payment options to our customers as well.

We are also committed to transparency and accountability in our sustainability efforts. We regularly conduct audits and assessments of our operations and make the results of these studies available to our customers, partners, and other stakeholders. By being open and transparent about our efforts to promote sustainability, we can help raise awareness and drive progress in this important area.

Ultimately, our goal is to create a more sustainable and responsible industry!
